Sky high predictions for commercial UAV industry

Updated: Nov 21, 2019

With the Paris Airshow currently in full swing, UAV's are again a hot topic and financial predictions for the commercial drone industry are set to continue to climb. The current global market is worth in the region of $4.9bn and forecasters are predicting this will rise to $14.3bn by 2028.

UAVs are being utilised by ever more industries as the go to tool for surveying, mapping, and agricultural uses. Drone technology used for agricultural field mapping, currently being the main revenue generation dominating the global market. From monitoring plant health and emergence, to yield prediction and drainage planning, drones have a huge role to play in the future of global agriculture.

Alongside the obvious benefits of real time monitoring of crops and the reduced costs compared to that of satellite imagery, the near future may hold some interesting solutions to potential threats to global agriculture.

It is now widely accepted that intensive farming methods and the consequences of global climate change could form a threat to bee populations, leading to concern over the future of plant pollination which underpins horticultural and agricultural production.

It has been reported that scientists in the Netherlands and researchers in Japan have investigated the use of drones for pollination of plants and crops. Specially designed drones have so far shown to be capable of pollinating flowers without damaging the plant. The research teams are now progressing with auto-piloted versions that could be used by growers to carry out the work on its own.
